KDC
See Key Distribution Center.
Kerberos
A security protocol that is used in Windows Server to authenticate users and network services. This is called dual verification, or mutual authentication. See also Mutual Authentication.
Kerberos Policies
Policies that are used to configure computer security settings for Kerberos authentication. Kerberos policies are set through account policies. See also Account Policies and Kerberos.
Kernel
The core process of a preemptive operating system, consisting of a multitasking scheduler and the basic services that provide security. Depending upon the operating system, other services such as virtual memory drivers may be built into the Kernel. The Kernel is responsible for managing the scheduling of threads and processes. See also Operating System and Driver.
Key
1. A randomly generated number used to implement advanced security, such as encryption or digital signatures. See also Key Pair, Public Key, and Private Key.
2. The Windows Registry uses keys to store computer configuration settings. When a user installs a new program or the configuration settings are otherwise altered, the values of these keys change. If viruses modify these keys, they can produce damaging effects.
Key Combination
When two or more keys are pressed simultaneously, such as Ctrl+Alt+Del.
KEYB
Configures a keyboard for a specific language.
Key Distribution Center
A domain controller that is responsible for holding all of the client passwords and account information. When a Windows Server computer is installed as a domain controller, it automatically becomes a KDC. See also Domain Controller.
Key Pair
A key that is divided into two mathematically related halves. One half (the public key) is made public. The other half (the private key) is known only by one user.
Kilobyte (KB)
1,024 bytes of information or storage space.
Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC)
A process that, among other things, generates the intrasite topology for AD replication.
Krbtgt
A special domain user account that is used by the Key Distribution Center service. See also
Key Distribution Center.
